What are CNG Conversion Kits

As the prices of petroleum-based fuels continue its volatile course, many people are taking the initiative to find an alternative fuel that is not only less expensive than gasoline or diesel but also cleaner and safer. There are a handful of alternative fuel technologies such as hydrogen, fuel cell, electricity and natural gas. However, most of them, especially hydrogen and fuel cell, are not yet readily available to the general public because of some technological and infrastructure hurdles.

Meanwhile, natural gas, specifically compressed natural gas, is one of the most attractive options among these alternative fuels. Compressed natural gas or CNG is a gas hydrocarbon compound whose volume consists of at least 85% methane and 10% nitrogen or carbon dioxide. Although natural gas is classified as a fossil fuel, which means it belongs to the same category as crude oil and coal, it is considered as the cleanest of all fossil fuels.

When natural gas is combusted, its natural by-products are carbon dioxide and water vapour. These are the same compounds that living organisms produce through respiration. Combustion of natural gas also produces lower levels of harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide compared to gasoline or diesel. Natural gas also produces lower levels of particulate and pollutant emissions that contribute negatively to the degradation of air quality.

Natural gas is also readily available in the United States. The country has an extensive natural gas resource base as well as a comprehensive pipeline delivery system that carries natural gas mostly to domestic users. Almost 85% of the natural gas consumed in the US is produced domestically. By tapping natural gas as the fuel of choice for vehicles, the country can ease its dependence on foreign oil imports whose prices have soared dramatically over the last few months.

However, vehicles that run on CNG are not yet readily available for passenger car buyers in the US. In fact, the only natural gas vehicle available for the general public today is the Honda Civic GX. Unfortunately, the Civic GX has very limited availability since only 1,100 units or less are manufactured and sold every year. Until natural gas vehicles are readily available in showrooms across the States, the only other option for a vehicle owner to start using compressed natural gas is by converting an existing vehicle from gasoline-powered to bi-fuel.

Fortunately, almost all vehicles that run on gasoline and diesel can be converted to CNG. Using the right CNG conversion kit, any vehicle owner can start reaping the advantages of using compressed natural gas. Ag Centrum conversion kits are the best kits for the job.
